Sociologist Christopher Lasch pushed back against Davis, calling Addams “a thinker of originality and daring.” Lasch is joined by other scholars, such as Louise K. Knight, who praises Addams’s synthesizing, strong, logical mind. Other critics claim Addams was overly optimistic, lacking a “tragic view” of life.

The residents were often well-educated women (or men) who would, in their work at the settlement house, advance opportunities for the working class people of the neighborhood. A few years following graduation, Addams took an inspirational trip to England with close friend Ellen Gates Starr, which introduced her to the social philosophy of John Ruskin and to a London settlement house, Toynbee Hall. Toynbee Hall served one of London’s poorest neighborhoods, offering recreation and educational programs. Her experience inspired her to open a settlement house in Chicago. Hull House continued to serve the community surrounding the Halsted location until it was displaced by the urban branch campus of the University of Illinois in the 1960s.

Aware of her celebrity, she collected a scrapbook of hundreds of articles extolling her influence. Allen Davis, a sympathetic but critical biographer, writes that Addams was “ambitious,” and “eager for publicity”—an admirable human being, but not just the self-sacrificing saint the public craved. “From the first word to the last,” her niece remembered, “she held the complete attention of her audience.” A woman of conviction, Addams was also a politician and compromiser. Generous, she had spent her inheritance on Hull-House and its many activities. By the mid 1890s and for the rest of her life, she lived off income from her writing and public speaking. Self-possessed, she moved easily among the wealthy and famous, perhaps a result of being born into the upper class of Cedarville.

After raising enough funds to rent part of the Hull Mansion, Addams and Starr set out to aid the needy immigrants in the Halsted Street area. Hull House opened as a kindergarten but soon expanded to include a day nursery and an infancy care centre. Eventually its educational facilities provided secondary and college-level extension classes as well as evening classes on civil rights and civic duties. Through increased donations more buildings were purchased, and Hull House became a complex, containing a gymnasium, social and cooperative clubs, shops, housing for children, and playgrounds. Hull-House exists today as a social service agency, with locations around the city of Chicago.

Today it continues under the name of Jane Addams Hull House Association, an umbrella organization composed of several social service centers across the city. Jane Addams (born September 6, 1860, Cedarville, Illinois, U.S.—died May 21, 1935, Chicago, Illinois) was an American social reformer and pacifist, co-winner (with Nicholas Murray Butler) of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1931. She is probably best known as a co-founder of Hull House in Chicago, one of the first social settlements in North America. Addams was the first woman president of the National Conference of Social Work. A pacifist, she served as president of the International Congress of Women in 1915 and founded the Woman’s Peace Party, the predecessor to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Hull House was the second settlement house to open in the United States, and of the hundreds of similar settlements opened around the country at the time, it was by far the most famous, most influential, and most innovative. Hull House offered residences, as well as a place where immigrants and neighbors could commune, learn, share and acquire the tools that would help them put down roots in their new country. Lathrop, who had been trained as a lawyer by her father, the United States senator, William Lathrop, was an excellent organizer, and took over the day to day running of the settlement. This was reinforced by the arrival in 1891 of Florence Kelley at Hull-House. A member of the Socialist Labor Party, Kelley had considerable experience of political and trade union activity. Throughout her time at Hull House, co-founder Addams recorded numerous accounts regarding the social work efforts of her settlement organization.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has preserved a small part of the buildings as a museum, after the University razed many of the original buildings of Hull-House. The original Hull mansion remains with much of the furniture used by Miss Addams. South of the original Hull-House is the restored settlement dining hall, one of the first buildings in addition to the main house opened by Jane Addams. The larger aim of the settlement movement was to bring the rich and poor in society together to live more closely in an interdependent community. Hull-House also conducted careful studies of its Near West Side community, which enabled them to advocate for programs that would benefit their working-class clientele at the municipal, state and federal levels. Jane Addams cofounded and led Hull House, one of the first settlement houses in North America.

In her autobiography, 20 Years at Hull-House (1910), she argued that society should both respect the values and traditions of immigrants and help the newcomers adjust to American institutions. A new social ethic was needed, she said, to stem social conflict and address the problems of urban life and industrial capitalism. Although tolerant of other ideas and social philosophies, Addams believed in Christian morality and the virtue of learning by doing. Young Addams graduated as valedictorian of Rockford Female Seminary at age 17 in 1881. In January 1961 plans to clear the area for a University of Illinois campus were announced by the city of Chicago. Legal protests by a community group organized to preserve Hull House and the neighbourhood were unsuccessful.

Race riots and the Red Scare at the start of the decade gave way to prosperity before the crash of 1929. In 1889, Jane Addams, an idealistic college graduate, rented a run-down mansion on a derelict strip of Halsted Street in Chicago’s Nineteenth Ward. The neighborhood was home to thousands of recently arrived immigrants—Italians, Greeks, Russian Jews, Bohemians, and Irish. Addams, like many young people, was searching for purpose and meaning.

It circulated the world as a "poster child" of sorts for the Hull House social experiment. On April 5, 1987, over a half century later, the Chicago Sun-Times refuted the contention that the Hull House Boys were of Irish ancestry. In doing so, the Sun-Times article listed the names of each of the young boys.[31] All twenty boys were first-generation Italian-Americans, all with vowels at the end of their names. "They grew up to be lawyers and mechanics, sewer workers and dump truck drivers, a candy shop owner, a boxer and a mob boss."

There are biographies for scholars, for the general reader, for young adults, and for children. At National History Day, a popular competition for middle and high school students supported by NEH, Jane Addams is a favorite subject. In her own time, the celebrated advocate of the poor was famous, then scorned, and, finally, reconsidered and elevated to the pantheon of American heroes. While often troubled by health problems in her youth, Addams's health began to seriously decline after a heart attack in 1926. She died on May 21, 1935, at the age of 74, in Chicago, Illinois.

In some cases, the source(s) of variability can be identified and potentially mitigated (e.g., variability could be reduced by automating data collection, standardizing the setting and time for data collection). However, there may be instances when there is too much variability during baseline conditions, and thus, detecting a treatment effect will not be feasible. There are no absolute standards to define what “too much” variability means [27].

This technique is based on applied behavior analysis and is often used for children with autism between the ages of 12 and 48 months. It utilizes play activities to help foster cognitive, social, and language skills. ABA therapy is widely used but has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Proponents of ABA therapy suggest that this approach can help people with autism develop new skills.

Single-Case Designs

First, a single case does not mean “n of 1.” The number of participants in a typical study is almost always more than 1, usually around 6 but sometimes as many as 20, 40, or more participants [24, 25]. Also, the unit of analysis, or “case,” could be individual participants, clinics, group homes, hospitals, health care agencies, or communities [1]. Given that the unit of analysis is each case (i.e., participant), a single study could be conceptualized as a series of single-case experiments. Perhaps a better label for these designs would be “intrasubject replication designs” [26].

Benefits and Limitations of ABA Design

If there is a trend in the direction of the anticipated treatment effect during baseline, or if there is too much variability, the ability to detect a treatment effect will be compromised. Thus, stability, or in some cases a trend in the direction opposite the predicted treatment effect, is desirable during baseline conditions. During development and testing of a new intervention, our methods should be efficient, flexible, and rigorous. We would like efficient methods to help us establish preliminary efficacy, or “clinically significant patient improvement over the course of treatment” [12] (p. 137). We also need flexible methods to test different parameters or components of an intervention. Just as different doses of a drug treatment may need to be titrated to optimize effects, different parameters or components of a behavioral treatment may need to be titrated to optimize effects.

In addition, a plethora of new analytic techniques can supplement experimental techniques to make inferences about causal relations. Combining SCD results in meta-analyses can yield information about comparative effects of different treatments, and combing results using Bayesian methods may yield information about likely effects at the population level. Determining whether the results are clinically meaningful and socially valid can be informed by visual and most forms of statistical analysis (i.e., not null-hypothesis significance testing) [42, 63]. One element in judging social validity concerns the clinical meaningfulness of the magnitude of behavior change. This judgment can be made by the researcher or clinician in light of knowledge of the subject matter, and perhaps by the client being treated.

Excessive variability is a relative term, which is typically determined by a comparison of performance within and between conditions (e.g., between baseline and intervention conditions) in a single-case experiment. The mere presence of variability does not mean that a single-case approach should be abandoned, however. Indeed, identifying the sources of variability and/or assessing new measurement strategies can be evaluated using SCDs. Under these conditions, the outcome of interest is not an increase or a decrease in some behavior or symptom but a reduction in variability. Once accomplished, the researcher has not only learned something useful but is also better prepared to evaluate the effects of an intervention to increase or decrease some health behavior.

The repeated measures, and resulting time-series data, that are inherent to all SCDs (e.g., reversal and multiple-baseline designs) make them useful designs to conduct parametric analyses. For example, two doses of a medication, low versus high, labeled B and C, respectively, could be assessed using a reversal design [67]. There may be several possible sequences to conduct the assessment such as ABCBCA or ABCABCA. If C is found to be more effective of the two, it might behoove the researcher to replicate this condition using an ABCBCAC design. A multiple baseline across participants could also be conducted to assess the two doses, one dose for each participant, but this approach may be complicated by individual variability in medication effects. Instead, the multiple-baseline approach could be used on a within-subject basis, where the durations of not just the baselines but of the different dose conditions are varied across participants [68].

The dependent variable ranges between 10 and 15 units during the baseline, then has a sharp decrease to 7 units when treatment is introduced. However, the dependent variable increases to 12 units soon after the drop and ranges between 8 and 10 units until the end of the study. Specifically, the researcher waits until the participant’s behaviour in one condition becomes fairly consistent from observation to observation before changing conditions.

These designs are also referred to as interrupted time-series designs [1] and stepped wedge designs [7]. SCDs include an array of methods in which each participant, or case, serves as his or her own control. Although these methods are conceptually rooted in the study of cognition and behavior [14], they are theory-neutral and can be applied to any health intervention. In a typical study, some behavior or symptom is measured repeatedly during all conditions for all participants.

Figure 3 presents simplified examples of these two possibilities using a reversal design and short data streams (adapted from [69]). The panel on the left shows additive effects, and the panel on the right shows multiplicative effects. The data also can be analyzed to determine whether each component is necessary and sufficient to produce behavior change.

Visuals also help individuals on the spectrum understand what’s coming next on their schedule. Many clients will rely on visual support to help manage their anxiety and stress levels. This can result in more appropriate behavior over time and a reduction in tantrums.

Lastly, consistency can be practicing specific skills like waiting or cleaning up after play. The most important thing is that these skills start to become second nature for the child. It might also be helpful to check in with your therapist during the final five minutes of the session each day. This might be a fantastic time to ask how the session went and if there was anything they would like to share.

It is possible that something else changed at around the same time and that this extraneous variable is responsible for the change in the dependent variable. But if the dependent variable changes with the introduction of the treatment and then changes back with the removal of the treatment, it is much clearer that the treatment (and removal of the treatment) is the cause. In other words, the reversal greatly increases the internal validity of the study.

Such manipulation could also be conducted in separate experiments conducted by the same or different researchers. Some experiments may reveal larger effects than others, which could then lead to further replications of the effects of the more promising intervention elements. This iterative development process, with a focus on systematic manipulation of treatment elements and replications of effects within and across experiments, could lead to an improved intervention within a few years’ time. Arguably, this process could yield more clinically useful information than a procedurally static randomized trial conducted over the same period [5, 17].

The first question a clinician may have is whether a particular intervention will work for his or her client [27]. It may be that the client has such a unique history and profile of symptoms, the clinician may not be confident about the predictive validity of a particular intervention for his or her client [6]. Furthermore, the use of SCDs in practice conforms to the scientist-practitioner ideal espoused by training models in clinical psychology and allied disciplines [78]. Table 2 presents a summary of methodological and assessment standards to permit conclusions about treatment effects [29, 30]. In an alternating treatments design, two or more treatments are alternated relatively quickly on a regular schedule.
